209 WHY ALTERS ARE CREATED

These are other multiples’ reasons for creating their alters. Think we got these from a website a long time ago. Some, of course, are the same or very similar to our reasons. Sometimes an alter is created for what seems a very small thing or incident but to the multiple who is already so wounded and vulnerable it is a very big deal and he or she needs to create another alter to deal with yet another wound. And how well it all can work.

-    birth personality. Split because the abuse worsened

without having awareness of the abuse

-    learned all the rules, manners and expectations that outside people said they
     needed to have

-    helps to heal other alters inside; very spiritual person; learned about other
      religions

-    tried to be good and not cause attention or trouble in order to stop the abuse

-    contain emotions

-    created to not know about the abuse so she could successfully deal with
      family situations and reunions

-    created to deal with school and be “normal”

-    contained anger aimed at the father

-    turn anger inward

-    a protector during recovery

-    tried to keep them perfect so didn’t cause problems or hurt mom

-    created on father’s wedding day to deal with abuse on that day and his
      remarks made that day
